Arsenal have always been in the limelight given the stature of the club, but their recent transfer target might come as a shock to most people. The North London club has been linked with a 32-million-pound move for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

This might come as a surprise to those who didn’t watch the club spiral down to eighth place in the premier league last season. However, Arsenal fans have voiced their disapproval with the current number one at the club, Bernd Leno.

The German goalkeeper was one of the best keepers in the league just two season ago. Hence, it’s a bigger surprise that he has let his form slip in the last season.

While still capable of making some great saves, his mistakes cost Arsenal big time as they are not competing in any European competition after years of being a mainstay on the biggest stage. However, a move for Aaron Ramsdale just doesn’t make sense.

They sold their second choice Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa last season, which was a bad move in hindsight. Martinez was one of the best keepers in the league last season. Furthermore, he helped Lionel Messi win his first international trophy with Argentina at the Copa America.

Meanwhile, Ramsdale was relegated with Sheffield United and while he was alright for the Blades, he couldn’t replicate the heroics of former number one Dean Henderson who helped Sheffield to a ninth place finish in the previous season.

Sheffield United were dead-last in the Premier League table and 32 million pounds is a lot of money. It’s hard to see anyone being happy about this move in the Arsenal support.

Arsenal look to replace Bernd Leno with Aaron Ramsdale

Another reason for this interest could be the fact that Leno’s contract is expiring in two years. However, there are better options that the club might look into. Their city rivals Tottenham Hotspur are in the same boat and are making a move for Atalanta goalkeeper Peirluigi Gollini.

Gollini was one of the best goalkeepers in Serie A last season and it will be a shrewd signing. The same cannot be said for Ramsdale. Fans would hope for this situation to change but Arsenal have not been linked to any other goalkeepers at all.
