Space-based action/adventure is one of the most exciting, albeit under-explored, genres in gaming. It has given the gaming community some entertaining titles in the last decade or so, and most will agree that Destiny 2 is one of the most fascinating ones among them.

Devs at Bungie have kept the game relevant by adding expansions to the game. Fans have been eagerly waiting for the upcoming expansion named Beyond Light. It will be a standalone item in the stores along with the base game, the expansion, a special Exotic Ghost shell, and a Legendary player emblem.

However, here is some news that might be a tad disappointing to the fans. In a recent “ask-me-anything”, or AMA session on Reddit, devs at Bungie Games confirmed that Destiny 2 will not be using a new game engine any time soon because it does not need it. The engine change Bungie brought about while shifting gears from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2 is redundant, according to Bungie.

“I certainly would not classify the Destiny engine as archaic”: Bungie engineering manager on Destiny 2

Bungie engineering manager Chris Kosanovich (u/BNG-ChrisK) replied with this when fans asked whether D2 will be getting a new game engine.

“Regarding the engine, Aldridge may speak to this more but every engine I’ve ever used has strengths and weaknesses. I certainly would not classify the Destiny engine as archaic and I certainly wouldn’t want to try to build Destiny in any other engine.

“Of course, there are processes that are slow and we’re making improvements to address our tech debt. Not totally sure what you mean about a ‘new engine in future titles’ but we updated the engine from D1 to D2 and continue to update the engine during D2 development. We’ll never make a whole new engine and move destiny to it, but any future games that Bungie makes wouldn’t necessarily need to use the Destiny tech if it doesn’t make sense for that game.”

Well, this does make sense. Yes, the world is standing on the brink of the next-gen in gaming. However, Destiny 2 features visuals and gameplay elements that still fit in. Chris is right in saying that the Destiny engine is certainly not archaic. Destiny 2: Beyond Light releases worldwide on the 10th of November this year, shortly before the next-gen console hit the stores.
