Excitement is higher than ever for the BMF title as we have 2 new contenders for it. This time, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier will go head-to-head in a clash at UFC 291. Moreover, this fight will not only determine the BMF champion but also holds the potential to decide the next challenger for the UFC lightweight title.

However, UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has made it clear that he has no interest in the BMF title or its contenders. The lightweight champion appeared in an interview with Daniel Cormier, where he heavily criticized the BMF belt. This sparked a heated debate within the MMA community and UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has come out for the BMF title’s defense.

In his recent YouTube video, Sonnen acknowledged the possibility that the winner of the Gaethje vs. Poirier bout could potentially become the number one contender for the lightweight title. Moreover, he shed light on what the current lightweight champion thinks of the BMF belt.

“Islam says the BMF belt is for bums. He said ‘I don’t want it right’. There’s a little bit of talk that Charles Oliveira isn’t the number one contender. But the BMF match, Gaethje vs Poirier is going to be looked at. Possibly the winner that becomes the number one Contender.”

Sonnen admitted that he loves the ‘heel’ persona that Makhachev carries, as arrogance is something missing from most of the Dagestani fighters. However, the UFC veteran disagreed with Makhachev and said that the BMF title is important. ‘The American Gangster’ feels that the title can have a positive impact on the division’s ranking and popularity.

“I like it when Islam goes heel. There’s an arrogance that you just don’t always get from the Dagestan guys. I find it refreshing, I think it’s fun. But that belt’s important guys.”

What exactly did Islam Makhachev say about the BMF title?

Returning to Makhachev’s critical remarks, he expressed his disinterest in the BMF title in his recent interview with Daniel Cormier. Moreover, he asserted that he could defeat Gaethje or Poirier with ease without needing such a belt. Furthermore, his tone suggested that he considers the BMF title to be inconsequential in the grand scheme of his career.
