South Africa skipper AB de Villiers has always been known for his explosive batting style, but during South Africa’s recent match against Pakistan, de Villiers created a new record. Unfortunately the record wasn’t gonna bring him glory like they always do. It was a horror show for de Villiers against Pakistan in their second Group B encounter at Edgbaston after being dismissed for a Golden Duck.
After Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock had departed for 0 and 31 respectively, De Villiers was hoping to build the innings with Faf du Plessis but was dismissed on the very first delivery he faced. Coming in to bat at the score reading 61 for 2 in the 15th over, de Villiers offered Mohammad Hafeez a simple catch at point off Imad Wasim’s bowling. De Villiers was out for a golden duck for the first time in his 221-match One Day International career.
Later, coach Domingo defended De Villiers’ batting and said he is a “quality player” in the press conference. He said, “He did pick up a little bit of a niggle with his hamstring today, but the medical team will look at him. I can’t comment until they have had a look. But I’m by no means concerned. I’m expecting him to put in a big performance on Sunday. He’s that type of player; that when the team needs him he’ll turn it up. I’m sure about that.”
This match was essential for both teams as they needed to win the match to make their chance of qualifying for semifinals stronger. Pakistan won the rain-affected encounter by 19 runs.
