The debate on whether male tennis players should play three-setters instead of the traditional five at Grand Slam events is getting interesting. Every day, one by one, players are taking sides on the matter. Now, the Russian Daniil Medvedev has sided with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in favor of the shorter format.
Winner of the 2020 Rolex Paris Masters, Medvedev is currently in London playing at the ATP Finals. In his first-ever match, he steered past the 2018 London winner German Alexander Zverev in just two straight sets. Instead of winning three sets which cross the five-hours mark regularly, the Russian would prefer winning only two. Additionally, women tennis players decide the winner in three-setters. It is, therefore, not an uncommon thought that players perform better in shorter formats.
The 24-year-old Daniil said, “If you ask me, I would change it to three sets. But I know that this opinion isn’t very popular.” As for the unpopular part, World No. 2 Rafael Nadal has stated that he’s against such a change in Grand Slam tournaments.
However, the Serbian Novak Djokovic wants the tournament to change with the changing tides. While many agreed on his take, but even then, some remained possessed by the grandness of a Grand Slam event.
