Amidst the intensity of England vs Australia match at Lord’s, chaos ensued as members of the environmental group Just Stop Oil barged onto the field. Two protestors breached the playing area after the first over, posing a threat to the integrity of the pitch. The immediate intervention of English and Australian players became crucial for protecting the playing surface from being damaged.

In a viral video posted by Darren Grimes on his Twitter, we see Jonny Bairstow taking matters into his own hands. He fearlessly approached one of the intruders and lifted him off the ground, carrying him all the way to the boundary.

The protestor had orange dye in his hands which he wanted to sprinkle over the pitch. But Bairstow effectively halted his progress and prevented any potential harm to the pitch.

However, the intruder did throw the dye on the outfield while being carried away. The dye was quickly removed with the help of a suction machine. David Warner and other players stopped the second guy before stewards came to get hold of both of them.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the owner of Lord’s, strongly condemned the pitch incursion by the protestors. Guy Lavender, CEO of the MCC, expressed, “MCC condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s pitch incursion…Their actions not only endanger themselves and those who work at the ground, but they have consistently shown complete disregard for the people who pay to attend events.”

Just Stop Oil’s Mission

The Just Stop Oil group, recognized as environmental activists, campaigns for the cessation of new fossil fuels. These fuels are being licensed and produced by the British government. Their disruptive actions have extended beyond cricket, causing interruptions in various sporting events across the country, including Formula 1 and soccer.

In a statement released after the incident, the group said, “Cricket is an important part of our national heritage, but how can we enjoy England vs Australia when much of the cricketing world is becoming unfit for humans to live in?

We can no longer afford to distract ourselves when the sports we play, the food we eat, and the culture we cherish is at risk,” the statement further added.

Reactions and reflections on this extraordinary moment

The incident swiftly spread across social media platforms, generating a diverse range of responses from fans. Some expressed frustration and outrage towards the protestors, emphasizing their disruptive behavior.

One Twitter user exclaimed, “These individuals have truly become a menace to society 🤨 like ridiculous!

Conversely, there were tweets lauding Bairstow’s heroism, with one user proclaiming, “Johnny Bairstow for Greatest Britain (British) tonight!

However, some fans supported the protestors as well. A user tweeted, “People are and should be free to protest..”
