Green Bay Packers great Brett Favre was one of the few NFL players to sign a lifetime contract while playing in the NFL. The three-time NFL MVP award winner famously signed a multi-year deal back in 1997. The Super Bowl winner signed a 10-year deal worth around $100 million back then. The Packers also signed promising youngster Aaron Rodgers during the 2005 NFL draft. The rest is history.

Favre eventually announced his retirement two years after Rodgers’ arrival. The California-born youngster emerged as the starting quarterback post Favre’s exit. Over the last 15 odd years, A-Rod has gone on to establish himself as one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the league.

But things have taken a different turn this year. The Packers opted to bring in Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. This was despite the fact that the Wisconsin-based franchise could have used some help in the wideout department. Packers fans and Rodgers himself revealed their surprise over the team management’s unexpected call.

One can’t help but compare the Jordan Love – Aaron Rodgers dilemma to what Brett Favre went through back in 2005.

Is Aaron Rodgers nearing the end of his career with the Green Bay Packers?

Popular sportscaster Colin Cowherd made a direct comparison between Aaron Rodgers’ current situation and that of Brett Favre 15 years ago. In 2005, Favre was the same age as Aaron Rodgers is now. Both were performing at a high level in the NFL. But Colin was critical of Rodgers’ display in the league over the last three years. He argued that Aaron’s passer rating was on a steady decline. In addition to that, A-Rod has been miserable in the NFC Championship game on his last three appearances. Cowherd argued that the veteran NFL quarterback is still a top-five quarterback in the league but is in the twilight of his career.

In comparison to Favre, both players were throwing for 4,000+ yards at this point in their respective careers. Of course, the number of interceptions for Rodgers is much lower than that of Favre. But that is largely down to A-Rod’s brilliant individual talent. He just can’t miss a throw.

It must be noted that Rodgers and Favre share a close bond. In fact, Brett was one of the first people that Aaron spoke to in the wake of Love’s arrival. While at Lambeau Field, Brett took rookie Aaron Rodgers under his wing. It seems that the student-turned-master is doing the same with young Jordan Love.
