Former welterweight interim champion, Colby Covington will be aiming to secure the number 1 contender spot for the welterweight gold as he takes the former welterweight champion and future Hall-of-Famer Robbie Lawler. Colby Covington, who went to the white house with his interim championship belt to meet Mr. President have claimed that someone from the first family will be at ringside for his next fight against Lawler.
The UFC welterweight division has never looked better and more competitive. Fighters such as Jorge Masvidal, Leon Edwards are in line for the title match against the current champion Kamaru Usman with some incredible performances in their last fights. But if Colby Covington can overcome the Ruthless Lawler, it would be pretty hard for UFC president Dana White to deny Colby the title shot.

Stylistically it’s an interesting fight. Robbie Lawler is a difficult fight for anyone in the roaster. He is a legend of the game and has wars over the years with fighters of high caliber such as Rory McDonald, Johny Hendricks, Carlos Condit. His tremendous power is always a game-changer. His takedown defense his second to none. Even if he lost his last fight to the Funky Ben Askren in a controversial decision, he looked phenomenal in that fight and almost knocked Ben out. If he manages to win against Colby, fans won’t be complaining if UFC decides to give Robbie a title fight.

On the other hand, Colby is coming off from a long layoff due to several reasons. He was set to fight for the title unification with Tyron Woodley, but unfortunate injuries prevented that from happening. And now he is all set to face his former ATT teammate Robbie Lawler. Colby Covington is decent at striking, but his wrestling is on another level. He overwhelms his opponents with his pace, and his cardio is perfect for a five-round main event bout. But he has a formidable task at hand considering he has to survive Robbie’s brutal punches for five long rounds if the fight continues for five rounds of course.

But apart from it being a great main event, which makes it more interesting is the back story. Colby Covington has said in his interviews that Robbie betrayed his former team ATT by quitting the team because there was a picture of Tyron Woodley in the gym, who defeated Robbie Lawler to be the welterweight champion. So the self-proclaimed prized possession of UFC, Colby Covington will be looking to get revenge for his team by defeating Lawler while Lawler will be looking to do what he does best, which is knocking opponents out to another dimension. Colby has also made steroid accusations to Robbie Lawler, who looked bigger and muscular in his last fight than he has ever looked in his career. It would be pretty interesting to see how these former teammates do against each other when the number 1 spot for the title is on the line.
