Colby Covington is notorious for generating nuclear heat with his activities both inside and outside the octagon. Recently, he took a jab at the former interim lightweight champion and his teammate from American Top Team, Dustin Poirier. Poirier fought Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event of UFC 242 with the lightweight title on the line. It was the biggest fight in Poirier’s career as he was one win away from being the undisputed UFC champion for the first time in his career.

However, Poirier’s teammate Colby Covington instead of showing support, trashed him on social media and picked Khabib Nurmagomedov to win the fight. Post fight, Poirier reacted to that and said he is not a sell out like Colby Covington.

Well now we have Covington’s response to that. In his recent interview with ESPN, Colby Covington said:

“I though that was very distasteful. I am not a sell out, I bought in and he tapped out. There is a reason they call me the people’s champ. I had to give them my honest opinion. Sorry that I can’t have an opinion.”

Well that’s not all of it. Colby also brought an incident from the past when Poirier picked Robie Lawler to beat Colby Covington. He recalled:

“I hoestly knew Khabib was a better fighter. He(Poirier) thought Robbie Lawler was a better fighter and he picked Robbie to beat me. Did I get my feelings hurt?”

The former interim welterweight champion, Covington did not stop there. He mocked Poirier by saying he was acting like a childish little kid in the press conference. Covington claimed:

“Dustin needs to stop making excuses and try to blame me for his loss. Sorry you suck you are not the best fighter of the world. He should get a sponsor from cleanex with that Emmy award winning act in the post fight press conference crying (about his dreams).”

Well it does seem that Covington has crossed the line again. However, he has already claimed that he is here to make money, not friends. Hence it’s not surprising anymore.

Reportedly, Covington was supposed to fight Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title. However, as per Covington that deal fell apart due to unfair negotiation on behalf of UFC. He also said that he would be fighting on December on an ESPN card, but he did not reveal his opponent.

In his last fight, Colby Covington dominated former champion, Robbie Lawler to earn the title shot against Usman, which would have been an exciting fight. However, with that fight falling apart and Masvidal vs Diaz fighting each other, there are not many exciting fights for Colby Covington other than Tyron Woodley or Ben Askren.
