Kim took up snowboarding from a very young age after she was encouraged by her father. Notably, she recently revealed how her father had his own unique techniques for making her practice.
Chloe Kim recalls training with her dad
Chloe Kim first started snowboarding at 4. It was her father, Jong Jin Kim, who was the encouraging factor. He always made sure that Kim practiced enough while making resources available for the same.
Kim was just 4 when her father took her to Gabriel Mountains, where they snowboarded together. As a child, she had her snow pants stuffed with cut-up pieces from a yoga mat to prevent injury.
Kim recently revealed that her father is a mechanical engineer. This meant that he had a good grasp of gravity and other technical concepts. And so, Jin Kim made little Kim do all kinds of weird tricks, and sometimes, he could be a little off, too.
“My dad was a mechanical engineer, and he really knew physics and how gravity works. But sometimes he would be a little…off,” said Kim.
Even during the off-season, the father-daughter duo would go to the park and practice all kinds of flips and tricks.
“In off-season training, we’d go to a park and he’d strap a snowboard on my feet, and I would go down the slide and learn how to do tricks,” she added.
All these years of practice and hard work paid off when Kim won her first Olympic Gold at just 17. Now, she is 21 and is looking forward to adding another medal to her tally.

Kim revealed that she was absolutely stress-free before her performance and just went out there to have fun. This, in turn, helped her grab her medal.
“I remember thinking, ‘Okay, cool. Let’s just have some fun, you know?’ Not a single stress in the world—no anxiety, no nothing. I was chilling, doing my thing, and it worked out for me, oh my gosh!” said the 21-year-old.
