It is no secret Cody Rhodes had a fallout with WWE in 2016. Because of some creative differences, he cut ties with the sports entertainment giant. For two years, he went to prove himself in the independent circuits. He then joined hands with AEW, which is WWE’s rival company.
In 2022, he said goodbye to Tony Khan’s promotion as well. And rejoined Vince McMahon‘s promotion later in the same year. The reason for his departure was due to unsuccessful negotiations for his renewal with the company. Though he is no longer in AEW, he still remembers the good times he had there.

This week’s Monday Night Raw was held in Jacksonville, Florida. Jacksonville City is the home of AEW. Being in AEW was one of the significant moments in The American Nightmare‘s career. The promotion helped him to shine brighter in the pro wrestling world.
The opening segment saw the 6’2 star kick off the show. The crowd welcomed him with a huge pop. He then addressed the crowd by saying, “Many of you know this was my home during the pandemic. We made a lot of good memories together. I say we make another good memory tonight.”
He spent around four years in AEW from 2018 to 2022. Around 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic also prevailed. So, AEW was kind of like a pandemic home for him. Surely, Rhodes referencing his AEW days on a WWE show piqued fans’ interest.

Rhodes was one of the 12 participants in the tournament, which is going to decide who is going to be the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion at WWE Night of Champions. Later that night, he had a triple-threat match against The Miz and Finn Balor.
And just like everybody predicted, Brock Lesnar cost him his title opportunity. As the 37-year-old star was about to pick up a pinfall victory over one of his match opponents, The Beast dragged him out of the ring. He then became a victim of an F5 and was even put through the announce table.

This led Balor to secure a victory and advance to the next level in the tournament where he will face Seth Rollins, who won the first round against Shinsuke Nakamura and Damian Priest. Later, The Visionary beat The Demon at the main event of the night.
Coming back to Lesnar, he was pretty pissed after his unexpected loss to Rhodes at WWE Backlash. Therefore, he took out his frustration on him on RAW. He also challenged his rival to another match at WWE Night of Champions on May 27 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
