This year’s XFL season started in February and ended in May. The dates lined perfectly with NFL offseason programs. After the conclusion of the XFL season, the league players became free agents just in time to register themselves for the NFL tryouts.
This couldn’t happen with USFL as the season began in mid-April and ended in mid-June. The dates overlapped with the NFL tryout’s registration dates. The USFL players were still under contract with the league and, therefore, unavailable to register for NFL tryouts.
This factor played a pivotal role in convincing players and agents to choose between the XFL and USFL before the leagues began. Those who played for XFL were able to become available just in time for NFL rookie camp tryouts. And those who did for USFL missed the opportunity this year.
The XFL players who made it to the NFL tryouts received Johnson’s blessing and tons of support.
