Hulk Hogan is a classy storyteller, both on and off the screen. He carries tons of interesting wrestling tales in his bucket, thanks to his priceless experiences from a rich, legendary in-ring career that spans almost three and a half decades. During a recent interview, Hogan looked back at one of the controversial matches of his career against the late Iron Sheik and how his own people tried to make him lose.

The veteran who utilized his enormous star power to bring mainstream popularity to the game back in the 1980s used to have a good rapport with some top figures of the business for obvious reasons. One of Hogan’s closest heavyweights includes the late Vince McMahon Sr. That said the late father of WWE’s ex-chief executive officer once denied offering a championship belt to Hogan against his match with Iron Sheik. He had a small disagreement with his own son, Vince McMahon Jr. in the process as well.

McMahon Sr. and the Hulkster, the wrestling moguls, have their fair share of good and not-so-good memories together. McMahon Sr. undeniably worked as a moving force to shape a young Hogan’s career, but it was his son who realized that the Hulkster was a real deal.

As WWE was ready to crown a new world champion in Hogan and have him take the title of The Sheik, indecision arose about who will leave with the belt. On the Joe Rogan Experience, Hogan narrated how McMahon Sr. wanted to delay Hogan’s moment and former world champion Bob Backlund was on board.

Explaining the different perspectives of McMahon Sr and his son McMahon Jr. on this, Hogan revealed, “I’m sitting there and Vince is clicking the quarters together and goes, ‘Well, I’m really thinking, you know, that I really don’t think we should do this tonight. We should put this off for about six months, and Bob Backlund pops up and says, ‘Yeah, I think a real athlete should be the champion.’ So I’m looking over at him, right, and like, what the hell’s going on here?” Hogan had left a good spot in AWA in Minnesota and was taken aback by the indecision in WWE over his title win, however McMahon Jr. stepped in.

Not being sold on the idea, Hogan wanted to leave following the match. But then Vince McMahon Jr. who wanted him to win, turned up and told him, ”Everything’s okay. I talked to my dad. Everything is settled down.”
