WWE’s sudden release of 18 superstars on September 21st has raised a few eyebrows among wrestling fans and observers. It was rumored that there would be budget cuts after the UFC-WWE merger was made official. Now a WWE official has reportedly explained the reasoning behind these abrupt releases.
Popular pro wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer clarified the situation behind the recent firings in WWE. The list contains a few big names including two-time former World Champion and a Grand Slam Champion, Dolph Ziggler.

Writing on Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Meltzer stated the reason behind these releases. He wrote, “The key to the releases was talent making main roster money but not being used on the main roster and with the idea that they were not going to be used in the future.” In the Newsletter Meltzer also cited the words of a WWE official regarding the releases.

“It’s time in vs. how much money you are paid vs. return on investment,” said one WWE official regarding the talent cuts according to Meltzer.

A total of 18 superstars were released which includes Riddick Moss, Emma, Elias, Rick Boogs, Dolph Ziggler, and Shelton Benjamin. They were rarely used on WWE television in recent months. Prior to the news of the release of these stars Mustafa Ali had himself announced that he was longer with WWE, despite being booked for a NXT North American title match against Dominik Mysterio at NXT No Mercy on September 30.
