There’s no doubt that WWE dominates the world of wrestling, being one of the most popular wrestling promotions out there. However, this prominence didn’t come overnight to the company. Several renowned wrestlers like The Undertaker, John Cena, and Dwayne Johnson put their best foot forward in the game so that WWE could cement its marquee status. However, a Hall of Fame legend thinks differently on the matter.
It wouldn’t be incorrect to say that Eric Bischoff bluntly puts forward his opinion on a matter. Even though it differs from the masses, Bischoff makes himself heard. Sometimes his statements come out controversial like the recent one where he detailed how WWE worked in 2012. In his opinion, the company got swayed by the fandom that the top talents of the roster brought.

Speaking on his podcast, ‘83 Weeks with Eric Bischoff,’ the WWE legend gave his unpopular opinion on the storytelling pattern of WWE back in 2012. Although he wasn’t there in the promotion during the time, Bischoff guesses what must have happened.
He said, “When you have so much success with The Rock and the Cena, coming off Austin, and that you had basically two wrestling generations as far as superstars go of massive success and then you have guys like the Undertaker in the bank that’s just instant cash as they say at my bank.”
Following his remarks, he reflected on how the success of top stars distracted WWE from long-term storytelling. However, it wasn’t the first time that he remarked on the top stars of the promotion.
“However, what happens is, it allows you to find comfort in short-term planning because just about anything you do is going to be pretty awesome,” Bischoff added.

The WWE legend also explained in detail how it only takes a moment for the ‘tsunami of fandom’ to destroy. He also implied that the promotion forgot the long-term storytelling that brought the success that it is riding on.
Bischoff reiterated his opinion with a metaphor
In the podcast, Eric Bischoff concluded his entire explanation of WWE’s failure in long-term storytelling quite metaphorically. He indirectly talked about how the promotion took their eye off the main storytelling and forgot the journey that lead them to the massive success.

In Bischoff’s opinion, WWE got undisciplined regarding its long-term storytelling. They were no more looking for the ‘big beats’ to advance their story for the following week. And all this discontinuity happened as they were ‘surfing’ well in the ‘tsunami of fandom.’
