“Always put the heat on yourself”: Cody Rhodes

The American Nightmare was recently featured on Season 1 episode 3 of the Gabby AF podcast as a special guest on the show. During the interview, the host and the guest chatted on various subjects, one of them being Rhodes detailing the basic rules of wrestling.

He said, “Wrestling 101 is always put the heat on yourself, always. Because there are guys who will come through the curtain before their opponent or something like that and they’ll start in on something that might have gone wrong or what happened… this and that and that, what it looks like is you’re making excuses.”

He said that a wrestler must always blame themselves if something goes wrong even when they know that they didn’t do anything wrong. He claims that it is the best thing to do, as it might save someone else from embarrassment in front of other people. In addition, he also gave an example from his past to justify why he lives by this notion.

The American Nightmare claimed that he always tries to put the heat on himself if and when something goes out of place. He gave an example from his days as Stardust in WWE. He detailed that he wrestled a star who had Toppik hair-building fiber sprayed on his head to cover up his bald spot.

Keeping the anonymity of the wrestler, he added that during the match, the hair fiber stained the ring mat. This caused WWE higher-ups to get furious, as ring mats are expensive and difficult to change during live shows. He was reprimanded because WWE officials thought it was his black Stardust paint that stained the ring mat.
