When Cody Rhodes left WWE for AEW, he carried resentment towards Triple H and Vince McMahon. This sentiment was visible in almost everything Rhodes did during his stay at AEW. His popular entrance song Kingdom starts with his iconic catchphrase “Wrestling has more than 1 royal family”. It’s a pun at the McMahon family that considers itself to be at the top of the wrestling dynasty. However, feelings and fortunes have changed for the former AEW star as he aims to garner major honors now in his old stomping ground.
Cody Rhodes continues his pursuit of winning the WWE title and completing the story etched by his father. Meanwhile, we will look at Cody Rhodes’ acclaimed Royal family of wrestling status and its origin.

The Rhodes family has three popular wrestlers in its family tree along with Cody’s wife Brandi Rhodes who was an AEW star. His father, Dusty Rhodes is the family patriarch who began his wrestling journey from a working-class background. Despite not having the ideal body of a wrestler, his charisma and relatability made him the beloved “American Dream,” leading him to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship victory in 1979.
The 1980s witnessed Dusty Rhodes’ rise as a top performer and head Booker in Jim Crockett’s promotions. His feuds with legends like Ric Flair and Harley Race at NWA solidified his status as a legendary wrestler. However, his departure from NWA did not turn out to be the best decision in his life.
Dusty assumed a behind-the-scenes role within WCW, while his son Dustin began making a name for himself in the wrestling world. Their bond grew stronger during this period, leading up to a match against Terry Funk at Clash of the Champions 1994.
Subsequently, Dusty found himself entangled in the NWO narrative, but ultimately, he parted ways with the organization. Meanwhile, Dustin embraced the provocative Goldust persona during his tenure in WWE.
Dustin encountered difficulties while portraying the Goldust character, which included a period in WCW when he assumed the persona “Seven.” Following the non-renewal of his WWE contract, he ventured into TNA before ultimately making a comeback to WWE. The revered wrestler asked for his release in 2019 which the WWE granted to him. Cody Rhodes’ brother now plies his trade at AEW as he looks to continue a storied career.
Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes aims to make inroads in furthering the family’s legacy by winning the title that eluded his father.

Cody Rhodes searches for a fairytale ending to his American Dream
In 2014, Cody Rhodes introduced the infamous character Stardust which was based on Goldust and donned previously by his father. However, Cody loathed it and it eventually left WWE for AEW for the same reason.
When Cody Rhodes returned to WWE, he came as The American Nightmare. He took a lot of inspiration for his gimmick from his father’s work. Dusty Rhodes’s quest for the World title also inspired the American Dream phrase at WWE. It is the same path that Cody has embarked upon, in search of a world title. He almost reached the promised land at WrestleMania 39 as he aimed to usurp Roman Reigns from his throne. However, he failed to get the job done. Rhodes could embark on a pursuit to complete the unfinished job in the near future.
