It’s not just the wrestlers who have to deal with the risk of life-threatening injuries while displaying skills in the ring. Rather, the most unsung players of the sport, referees are also not free from that risk. We saw a plethora of referees take damage to their bodies while managing a match.

Recently, veteran referee Mick Chioda opened up on the numerous physical hazards he had to bear throughout his entire career. One of the most nerve-wracking experiences hit him when former Intercontinental Champion Ahmed Johnson tried to throw him from the middle of the ring.

Ahmed Johnson didn’t have the longest stint in the Stamford-based company. However, from 1995 to 1998, he fought a fair amount of high stake matches against some big names in the company, including Triple H. During one of his grudge matches against the Hunter, Johnson took the hit at referee Mick Chioda.

When he tried to throw him from the center of the ring, Chioda tried to get rid of it by throwing himself up, but couldn’t escape the injury. It was so severe that he had to be taken to the hospital following the incident.

Recalling the shell-shocking experience, the 56-year-old noted, ”The worst was Ahmed Johnson. Throwing me from like he was so blown up working with Triple H and I remember he just he had to press me and throw me on Triple H on the outside. But he just was so blown up. He tried to throw me from almost like the center of the ring and I threw me I hit the top ropes. but I went flipping hit the end of the ring hit the floor couldn’t feel my body for a little I was in the hospital for a couple of days. ”

However, coming to Johnson’s short yet controversial tenure in WWE, there is a popular stance that the star himself brought his own downfall.

Ahmed Johnson was among those few names who were Vince McMahon’s best choices to confer upon the world championship status. However, despite soaring high in the initial period of his pro wrestling career, Johnson ultimately disappointed McMahon, failing to live up to the hype.

While many would like to call it mere bad luck, another WWE legend, Bruce Prichard, believes it’s his own wrongdoings that brought the misfortune in his career. According to Pritchard, Johnson failed short to handle the huge spotlight that he received from the company.
