The latest edition of WWE SmackDown made significant headlines, as it was supposed to. One of the show’s highlights occurred during the face-off between 2024 Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns. Rhodes had to make a decision about his opponent in the big event. And he confirmed that he would fight Reigns for the undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

However, the situation took an unexpected turn when he suddenly dropped a bombshell that he would be coming for the belt, but not at WrestleMania. This was followed by the grand appearance of “The Brahma” Bull, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who is now the possibly confirmed opponent for Roman Reigns.

To the confusion of Reigns, Paul Heyman, and fans, Rhodes explained that he had been talking to friends, family, and WWE legends. This included someone who knew him very well and advised him, and he listened. And it was none other than The Rock. “The Brahma Bull” insisted that he should be the one facing the Tribal Chief at WrestleMania 40. And while the broadcast ended there, leaked fan footage showed a small promo by The Rock as he told the fans in attendance that they made history. He said, “This is a city deep in history. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I’m happy to tell you that tonight, all of us, tonight we made history in Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham, I thank you. I love you.” He signed off with his signature, “IF YOU SMELL WHAT THE ROCK IS COOKING,” to put an end to the show.

Before ending the broadcast, the WWE announced that a press conference before WrestleMania XL will take place next Thursday, February 8, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Little or nothing is known, but it could be that in this big press conference, the long-awaited match of The Rock vs. Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 will be confirmed.

However, the big question remains whether this match will be for the undisputed WWE Universal Championship. If the WWE goes for the former option of being a championship match, then dethroning Roman Reigns would mean a more extended stint for The Rock with the company. And it seems less likely to occur. Currently, Johnson has his hands full with the UFL kickoff coming up, as well as the responsibilities that come with being on the board of the TKO.

On the contrary, not dethroning the Tribal Chief at WrestleMania would be a missed opportunity for the WWE. The Rock is the biggest name in the industry, and his dissolving the Bloodline would make sense. As for Cody Rhodes, he would most likely be squaring off against Seth “Freakin” Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship at the grandest stage of them all. What do you think? Can we see The Rock become a champion again at WrestleMania 40? Let us know in the comments.
