Unable to finish his story at WrestleMania 39, WWE superstar Cody Rhodes will look to take on Roman Reigns in a rematch at the next edition of the marquee event. WrestleMania 40, set to emanate from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 6 and 7, 2024, could be Rhodes’ crowning moment. But Dwayne Johnson’s latest claim now looks to run over The American Nightmare’s aspirations.
Johnson, who confirmed that he was Vince McMahon’s initial choice to face Roman Reigns at the SoFi stadium on April 2 of this year, has said he is open to taking on his cousin in ‘The City of Brotherly Love’. But there’s still a way for the 38-year-old to avenge his WrestleMania 39 humiliation and finish his story.

If you have been a WWE fan for long, you would know that if Dwayne Johnson wants something done, he’s most likely to get it done. In this scenario, how does the Prince of Pro Wrestling save himself from losing out without riling Johnson?
Here are three ways Cody Rhodes could do it. All three may seem distinct possibilities but plans can always change depending on how the storyline around Reigns and Rhodes progresses over the course of the next six months or so.
Cody Rhodes finishes his story early
Cody Rhodes goes back to SmackDown, the brand that houses Roman Reigns at the moment. He somehow manages to have a title match and win it before WrestleMania. Then he goes down to Johnson who takes the belt and sets up a match with Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
This will complete Rhodes’ story as winning the WWE Championship does the trick for him and will give WWE its marquee match in Philadelphia next year.
Roman Reigns faces Rhodes and The Rock for different titles
Yes, the two belts, the WWE title and the Universal title were fused into one grand championship, but it won’t be too hard for the powers that be to split the titles given that Reigns technically holds two championships. For the sake of storyline and to satisfy its fans, WWE can go down that route.
Rhodes and Johnson challenge Reigns for single belts, where the Raw superstar goes for The WWE Championship and Johnson for The Universal Title. This will ensure a fight between the cousins, which fulfills what both Rhodes’ fans and WWE want.
Triple Threat at WrestleMania 40, history repeats itself
The third route WWE can go down is a Triple Threat match between the champion Roman Reigns, Dwayne Johnson, and Cody Rhodes. This is also the most realistic of the three possibilities. But for that, Johnson will need to break his near-four-year hiatus and come back to the promotion. The existing problem, however, is that Rhodes and Reigns are part of different brands and they’ll have to be placed in one particular roster for Johnson to address them simultaneously. Given how WWE plays fast and loose with its brand split, it won’t be much of an issue. And if they do book a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania 40, it will continue a tradition as well.

WrestleMania XX saw Triple H defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels and a certain Chris Benoit in the main event. Ten years later Randy Orton defended his WWE Heavyweight Championship titles against Batista and current AEW star Bryan Danielson in the main event clash at WrestleMania XXX. So, will WWE seek to repeat history and go for another historic Triple Threat Match at WrestleMania 40?

That said, fans will have to adopt a wait-and-watch method to see if Johnson actually comes back and shows an interest in wrestling Roman Reigns.
