For many fans, the only man to take down Roman Reigns at this point is Dwayne Johnson. The Rock’s return is one thing that WWE has been hinting at, ever since the main event at WrestleMania 39. Seeing Cody Rhodes lose in his biggest match to date was a major blow to the hopes of every fan watching, live or on TV.
But even though Johnson’s return seems imminent, we still think that Rhodes will be the one to dethrone Roman Reigns. This way, the youngest Rhodes will cement his legacy by winning the WWE title that his father and brother could never come close to. To go along with our prediction, we have three reasons why Rhodes will be the face of the company at WrestleMania 40.
Dwayne Johnson’s return doesn’t mean that title will change hands

The buzz around Dwayne Johnson returning to WWE is definitely going to get many eyes on the product. Even though WWE is breaking records when it comes to engagement, having the biggest actor in Hollywood enter the squared circle will only boost the company.
Though his return is imminent, Dwayne Johnson isn’t a star who would stick around WWE for long. Having Roman Reigns break these historic records is indicative of WWE making the title a bigger deal than it was back in the 2010s. Reigns won’t go down in a matter of seconds and The Rock won’t work well as a transitional champion between Reigns and the next champion.
So, his appearance is more beneficial as a cameo or helps to build another star into the main event scene. Another thing to note is that no one has revealed that The Rock will wrestle Reigns to any degree. Given The Rock’s age, he won’t be taking any risks when it comes to his physique. So, he’s off the table when it comes to taking down Reigns as the world champion.
Building credibility with the help of WWE legends like John Cena and Brock Lesnar
Ever since losing his biggest match at WrestleMania 39, Rhodes has not stopped building his image back up. Even before his big match, John Cena raised the American Nightmare’s hand, signaling the new top-face guy in the company.
While Cena’s appearances in WWE have been fleeting this year, he made sure to give Rhodes the rub. That definitely puts Rhodes above everyone else when it comes to authenticity as the top guy in the company. Also, Rhodes just went through the same story that Cena went through, back in 2011 to cement himself as the top guy against Brock Lesnar,
But if that wasn’t enough of an endorsement for you to believe that he’ll be the one to take down Roman Reigns, just look at SummerSlam. Competing with one of the most brutal wrestlers on the roster, Brock Lesnar, Rhodes proved that he could deliver entertaining bouts with any kind of opponent. Going 2-1 against Lesnar isn’t anything to scoff at, and it has truly elevated Rhodes’ image in WWE.
But that isn’t all. Like a cherry on top of a cake, Lesnar also endorsed the young star at the end of their match. This felt monumental when you add the fact that Triple H revealed this was unscripted. Getting the rub from two of the biggest legends of the past two decades definitely strengthens our argument of Rhodes taking down Reigns.
Cody Rhodes has come back to ‘Finish the Story’
Finally, the one thing that made Rhodes come back to WWE in the first place. As he mentioned numerous times in his promos leading up to WrestleMania 39, Rhodes is here to ‘finish the story’. This means that he will win the world title regardless of anything in his path. While he was unsuccessful once, that doesn’t mean he has diverted from his primary goal.

In various media scrums, which take place directly after the PLEs. Rhodes made it clear that he will finish the story. Couple that with the news that Vince McMahon was the one who went to Rhodes’ house to get him to come back to WWE. All these reasons and facts only point in one direction, Rhodes coming out on top at WrestleMania 40 as the new WWE Universal Champion.
But we aren’t the only one who is supporting Rhodes’ upward climb in WWE. The booker and creative head of the company, Triple H, just gave a strong clap back to many who doubted his decision of making Rhodes lose at WrestleMania 39.
