After the highly anticipated merger of the WWE and UFC, a dark cloud loomed over the head of WWE’s main roster. On September 21, multiple stars, including Dolph Ziggler, Shelton Benjamin, Emma, Aliyah, and more, were released by the WWE. This sudden, unannounced move by the company shocked the WWE universe. Taking to social media, many stars announced their release while pointing fingers at WWE’s creative head Triple H.

Many of these wrestlers had ongoing feuds and upcoming matches. While WWE scrambles to fix storylines and matches, fans are still shocked at this heartbreaking news. This becomes even more shocking as it took place after a $1.4 billion merger deal. One WWE star, in particular, had some pretty harsh words to say about the WWE bigwig.

Nhooph Al-Areebi, better known as Aliyah in the ring, debuted on NXT in January 2016. She was later drafted to SmackDown in 2021. During her time in the company, she held the record for the fastest victory by defeating Natalya in 3.17 seconds on SmackDown.

Despite this massive achievement, she claimed on social media that she knew she would get the axe. Unlike most of the released stars on WWE, Aliyah has not had any ongoing feuds for a year now. In fact, she was hardly seen on the program. Her last match occurred in September 2022, when she lost the Women’s Championship to Damage CTRL.

Taking to her social media, on X, she posted that she was no longer a part of the WWE. However, on Instagram, she posted, “They never wanted me to be your girl. But y’all made me your girl. Thank you 💗💗”

This also had a video package of a montage of her time in the company. According to a report by Fightful Select, the 28-year-old was rarely brought on for tapings. She was not factored into any creative plans or storylines. This is where she knew she was going to get the axe, especially since this was a whole year before her release. The message to her fans tells you that she knew that WWE wasn’t prioritizing her, hinting at her eventual axing.

When the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship titles were vacant, she teamed up with Raquel Rodriguez to win on August 29, 2022. However, they dropped the title to Damage CTRL’s Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky in September 2022 after only 14 days. This was another hint that the creative team had no idea what to do with her. Post her loss, she was sidelined due to an injury and benched from WWE programming. This added more fuel to the speculations that the WWE creative team head, Triple H, had no plans for her.

Her message to fans about her injury and departure

While Aliyah took a short break from wrestling, WWE’s lack of plans for her seems to have led to her eventual release. It’s clear from her farewell post that the wrestler took issue with the promotion not prioritizing her. This is especially true, considering how she was put on the bench for over a year.

Shortly after her match with Damage CTRL, which cost her the Women’s Tag Team Championship, Aliyah posted about what exactly had happened to her in the ring. “I have to say my last match was probably one of my most favorite… Yes I got injured mid match, however I have this overwhelming gratitude towards the incident because I felt like it pulled out a version of me that I never even knew existed,” she said on her Instagram.

More specifically, Aliyah had suffered from a rib and AC sprain. Unfortunately, while Aliyah was soon cleared to fight again, this had never come to fruition. Ever since her last match in September 2022, Aliyah had been benched up till her release, spending almost exactly a year with nothing to do at the promotion.

However, it might be that the wrestler is just getting her bearings in the industry. With Aliyah still at the height of her career and an impressive record behind her, the wrestler may be looking to continue her streak. “‘Keep going!’ I remember thinking. ‘I never get opportunities like this one’ another voice in my head screamed. So idc I’m going to keep going and keep showing out,” she had said in her post regarding the injury.

While Aliyah was never going to be WWE’s ‘it girl’, with that kind of positivity on her side, we might just be seeing the wrestler in the ring again soon. What do you think about Aliyah and other stars’ release from WWE? Do you think Triple H is at fault for not utilizing them properly?
