Vince McMahon is generally known to be a shrewd and ruthless businessman. What we’ve had a chance to see on the WWE is his villainous side, which is obviously part of a storyline. But his relationship with wrestlers was very professional and with some, it’s more like family. One such special bond was with ‘The Great One’ Dwayne Johnson.
Vince McMahon has only been close with a few wrestlers in the past and The Rock grabbed a sweet spot on that list.

Dwayne Johnson is the son of Rocky Johnson, an ex-WWE wrestler, and Ata Johnson, who is the daughter of ex-WWE legend Peter Maivia. Thus, both sides of his family were well into the WWE. And this is one reason Johnson knew exactly what to do when he was not selected to play for the NFL in 1995.
After joining the WWE in 1996, he started off with the name Rocky Maivia, which was a combination of his dad’s and grandfather’s name. But later on, it was converted to the now iconic ‘The Rock’. Being from a family of legendary wrestlers who have worked with the WWE, Johnson quickly found favor with Vince McMahon. In addition to that, McMahon also noticed his charisma, impeccable mic skills, and quick wit, thus pushing him to be one of the top stars of the Attitude Era.
Johnson and Vince McMahon shared a special bond, almost like a father and son, as McMahon took The Rock under his wings. On the recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy explained the same. He said, “But I feel when you look at the relationship between The Rock and Vince, it was more, as I’ve described before, like a father-son thing in some ways. Because I think Rocky started in Memphis but he was kinda in the system to work for Vince from day one, once he started pro wrestling. So I think Vince almost has a little bit more of a love for someone like that where he almost feels like he is taking him under his wings.”
But Johnson was not the only WWE wrestler whom McMahon saw as a son.
