Masks in luchador wrestling are a sacred item for a wrestler. It holds the prestige and legacy of generations of wrestling. In many promotions, wrestlers’ masks are never touched or removed in a storyline whatsoever, but the case wasn’t the same for Rey Mysterio in WCW back in the ’90s.
‘The Biggest Little Man’ in WWE is one of the most popular masked wrestlers in the company. His career has been adorned by glorious moments of victory whether it was the WWE Championship or the Royal Rumble triumph in 2006. But he didn’t get the same validation from WWE’s rival company in the ’90s, WCW.
Rey Mysterio reveals the moment WCW made him feel uncomfortable

After his Hall of Fame induction ceremony this past weekend, Mysterio sat down with Logan Paul on his show, ImPaulsive. In the show, the former world champion talked about a lot of things, including his time in WCW.

While talking about wrestling without his mask in WCW, Mysterio recalled, “I really wasn’t comfortable. I didn’t wanna go through that phase. Back then I really protected my face. When I came to WWE, it was a machine. The way they just put the mask out there, that’s something that the WCW never did. That’s why I came back with the mask.”
Even back in WCW, Mysterio was a popular wrestler who was making his name with the promotion by bringing in a new style of wrestling. So why did Eric Bischoff, the mind behind the company would have asked Mysterio to wrestle without a mask?
The real story behind WCW’s Lose the Mask storyline
The storyline took place in 1999 when Mysterio was at the top of his game in WCW. He and Konnan had a program with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall and they were in a hair vs mask match. Despite being uncomfortable with the idea of wrestling without the mask, Mysterio had no way of getting out of it.

Eric Bischoff, the GM of WCW, reportedly threatened Mysterio with his job if he refused to do it. But soon after, when WWE bought out the company, Mysterio was able to return his mask to the ring. Mysterio later revealed Scott Hall to be the perpetrator of this mask reveal.
