‘The Giant Killer’ was born and raised in Mexico. Despite being at a said disadvantage of height, his uncle didn’t slack on his training. From the age of 14, Rey Mysterio Sr. trained his nephew and even accompanied him during the early stages of his career. According to the star himself, his family wasn’t too enthusiastic about his wrestling career, but he still wanted to pursue his dreams.

In 1992, he signed with AAA, a Mexican pro-wrestling company, but this wasn’t enough for him. Later, he also made an impactful debut in ECW and won the ECW World Television Championship. This was a notable mark on his prestigious career.

Mysterio’s iconic WCW run happened in 1996 when he signed with the promotion. This was the era when he wrestled with legends like Eddie Guerrero. Then, a few years later, the Mexican wrestler signed with WWE, debuting there in 2002.

Following this, we all know how he climbed the ladder to the top. Now, he serves the Stamford-based company as a legendary wrestler on the main roster. Although we all are now aware of his wrestling story, step by step, let’s take a look at the struggles he faced during this time.

Who was there to support Rey Mysterio’s dream?

The luchador didn’t have the best of support from his household when he came to the US. According to the wrestler himself, he faced a number of economic challenges while struggling. Mysterio had given a lot to his career, but wasn’t seeing much progress in his lifestyle. He had to sleep in a gym, and on top of everything, being away from his family made him homesick.

During his Hall of Fame speech, he revealed how he told his girlfriend – now wife – that he wished to return home. Since Angie Gutierrez couldn’t bear her beloved giving up on his dreams, she dropped her medical career to get a full-time job and support Rey Mysterio financially.
