The last episode of Monday Night RAW after Crown Jewel 2023 saw a Fatal Four-way match for the #1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship. Despite The Miz winning the match, the original plans involved a different ending.

This entire run is to solidify The Miz’s face turn, which was hinted at during his Miz TV interview with Gunther.

Dave Meltzer reveals the original plans for the match

According to Meltzer, the original idea was for The Miz to win the match against Ivar. The ending, which many fans hated with the double pin, was impromptu to have another match between the two. The match featured The Miz,  Bronson Reed, Ricochet, and Ivar. The match was action-packed, with the big guys taking on each other while the small ones also did their work.

However, the ending of the match seemed to have fans scratching their heads. Ivar hit a moonsault on Ricochet while The Miz countered a Tsunami attempt from Reed into a roll-up. The match ended with Ricochet kicking out while Reed did not. This led to a bit of a confused win for The Miz. However, Ivar did not like who continued to beat him down.

Meltzer said. “Adam Pearce was gonna go in and make the announcement that, because of what happened, we’re gonna have a match next week between Miz and Ivar.” This would play into the storyline of the superstar winning and facing Gunther at Survivor Series WarGames on November 25, 2023.

Meltzer ended it by saying, “Unless they change their plans, it’s gonna end up Gunther and Miz.” This confirms that The Miz remains likely to emerge triumphant in his match against Ivar. This will conclude Miz’s face turn, which has not happened in a long time.

Meltzer explains the match ending in better detail

According to Meltzer, “Ricochet was supposed to be pinned, but he was kicked out because he was messed up.” This is due to a nasty injury he sustained during the match. The original ending would have had both Ivar and The Miz successfully pinning their respective opponents.

This would lead to the GM announcing the two for a match to secure the #1 contender during the next Monday Night RAW episode.
