Dwayne Johnson is a household name today as a top Hollywood action hero. For over a decade, he has been a part of several top movies which fans fondly remember. However, before becoming an actor, he was a WWE superstar and to this day he holds the business close to his heart. The Rock recently opened up about why he joined the family business and it’s not because they shut the doors of the NFL down for him.

The Brahma Bull has witnessed pro wrestling closely since he was a child. Therefore, it was destined for him to be a wrestler, but it was a long road for him to step into the ring for several reasons.

Dwayne Johnson reveals the reason he joined the family business

Recently, the WWE legend appeared on The Pivot Podcast where he shared he loved wrestling even before joining it. He went on to explain how wrestling was back in the 80s, by giving an example of the movie, The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke.

The Rock said, “In the movie, The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, that’s the way that guys were. That’s the way so many guys like my dad, and had it not for the blessing of god that I was able to take care of them. He would’ve been like that too, where they lived paycheck to paycheck.”

Furthermore, DJ added, “So as I was growing up I loved wrestling, but I wanted to make money. I wanted to make a lot of money to take care of my family. We never lived in a house, so my goal was I want to buy my parents their first house.”

Johnson has shared several times about the time his family was evicted from their house when he was young. Hence, it was his goal to buy his parents a house and today he lives in a $27.8 million mansion in Los Angeles.

He recalled he started playing football considering it as a ticket to achieve his goal. Nevertheless, Johnson claimed he always loved wrestling but never looked at it until the day came when he realized he had to follow in his father’s footsteps.

The Rock credits wrestling for saving his grandfather, father, and himself. Moreover, now his daughter is also in the family business. However, Rocky Johnson didn’t have an easy time in the business as DJ explained what wrestling was in the 80s.

Working the gimmick was important

While talking about the professional wrestling business, Johnson compared how wrestling today is great compared to the 80s. Indeed, he is right as current stars can break kayfabe in public and earn more. But the wrestlers in the 80s had to work the gimmick and weren’t getting paid as stars today do.

DJ said, “Well, back then wrestling was the guys all had to have a Cadillac or the Lincoln. You’ve to have the gold and the diamonds. And then afterward, after the match you go back home to either the trailer park or your apartment. So we were always working the gimmick.”

Nevertheless, The People’s Champion calls it a great business, if one is ready to put in the hard work. He also praised current stars who are getting paid well and are working hard to be at the top in their respective companies.
