The 2022 Royal Rumble was won by Brock Lesnar after entering at #30 as he went on to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. The same night he lost his WWE Championship title to Bobby Lashley. Hence, a change in script was required.
Former WWE superstar, Matt Riddle was invited to the podcast of former WWE legend Kurt Angle called The Kurt Angle Show. In episode #147, uploaded on YouTube on January 14th, Matt Riddle disclosed certain details about Royal Rumble 2022 while asserting that he was supposedly winning it.

Recalling the Rumble, Riddle said, “I am not gonna say I was guaranteed to win because anybody that’s wrestled in WWE knows nothing’s guaranteed.” He further said, “A lot of things are told to you and don’t happen, and other things happen. But yes, at one point I was told it was a possibility that I win a Rumble and that I was gonna do a triangle to Brock and this and that.” This was in stark contrast to Dave Meltzer confirming that Riddle wasn’t one of the prospects to win the Rumble.
Well, Riddle’s statement wouldn’t be a surprise for any WWE fans who understand the relationship between Vince McMahon and Brock Lesnar. Riddle does not blame Lesnar directly for the omission of his name but says, “I wouldn’t say if it wasn’t for Brock Lesnar. Brock Lesnar doesn’t write the script, but at the same time anybody that’s been in the back knows people can be very influential.”
Lesnar is one of the most decorated WWE superstars and perhaps in combat sports history. He is a genuine money-maker for any promotion. Hence, he holds quite a lot of creative power in the drawing room. So, as per Riddle, it was probably Lesnar’s influential power that caused a change in the script.

Riddle further explained the reason behind the acceptance of a last-minute change in script. He said, “I have no hard feelings, he just did the job to Bobby. He goes, ‘Hey, you guys gotta do business for me. I did good business for Bob, do good business for me.’ And we’re like, alright.”
The decision to make Lesnar win his second Rumble was a surprising one even for fans. But it makes more sense considering how Royal Rumble is often used as a ladder for building up storylines at WrestleMania, hence last-minute changes are expected.
