For many, John Cena is synonymous with WWE. His work for more than two decades with the professional wrestling promotion has seen him win 16 championships. But it all could have been washed over, if not for one accident.

While Cena has reached a level where he doesn’t need to continue his wrestling career, he still vividly remembers his humble beginnings. And a particular incident from his early days is surely one to remember given the majestic career he has had after it.

John Cena recalls how his unique quirk impressed Stephanie McMahon and saved his wrestling career

In an interview with Andrew Santino, John Cena talked about how he stumbled onto one of his most recognizable characters, the Doctor of Thugonomics. Cena replied that it was all an accident. Being new to the industry, he used to keep his mouth shut in group interactions, but as he knew he was going to be let go from the company, he enjoyed himself on an international tour.

In the tour bus, wrestlers were freestyling back and forth and when Cena’s turn came, he gave it his all. All the way in the front of the bus, Stephanie McMahon heard it and she came to the back to ask Cena about this little quirk.

“She was like, how did you do that? How did you remember all that? I kind of explained the idea of freestyle and she was like make something on me right now. So I spit a few bars and she’s like do you want to do that on TV.”

John Cena’s past with Stephanie McMahon in WWE

After this change in character, Cena and McMahon also had countless interactions on-screen. One of the most memorable ones was when John Cena spanked Stephanie McMahon in the middle of the ring. But that was one of the goofier interactions.

During the time when McMahon was part of The Authority, she ruined Cena’s life in WWE, putting him through countless challenges and sending Kane and Seth Rollins to beat up The Champ. But in the end, both of them had great chemistry and gave us memorable moments in the ring. Also, it is wild to think that if McMahon hadn’t recognized Cena’s talent, they would have let him go.
