“John Cena Tore His Pec While Doing a Hip Toss”: Daniel Bryan, Who Lost 2 Years of His Career Due to Neck Injury, Breaks Silence on Will Ospreay’s Career-Ending Move On Kenny Omega

AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door was nothing short of spectacular. One of the most talked-about matches that stole the show was Kenny Omega Vs Will Ospreay. Before they locked horns at the Forbidden Door, Omega defeated Ospreay in a very physical match at Wrestle Kingdom. However, Ospreay had his chance at redemption at the Forbidden Door in Ontario, Canada.

At one point during the match, Ospreay delivered a devastating Tiger Driver, almost costing Kenny Omega his career. While it worried the fans, Bryan Danielson came in support of Ospreay, citing an example of John Cena.

Bryan Danielson gives his take on Will Ospreay almost ending Kenny Omega’s career

There are certain moves in wrestling that have become a thing of the past. The piledriver, for example, was consistently used back in the day. However, due to the risk involved in the move, fans rarely see wrestlers perform the move in the ring. However, Will Ospreay used a version of piledriver that is just as much dreaded. 

Fans were aghast when Ospreay delivered a devastating Tiger Driver 19 that saw Kenny Omega landing head first. For a moment, fans called into question Omega’s participation in the match. However, he showed signs of life by pulling himself back into the match.

While speaking during the Forbidden Door media scrum, Bryan Danielson was asked about his opinion of Will Ospreay using the near-lethal move on Omega in their match. 

According to Danielson, injuries are commonplace in wrestling, regardless of how dangerous or safe the wrestling is. Danielson also recalled a moment that when John Cena tore his pec from a hip toss. Although a hip toss is not even remotely as severe as a Tiger Driver, it still cost Cena a few months of his career. 

He said, “I remember when I was in WWE and John Cena tore his pec taking the hip toss, right? And so there are these things. I go and I talk to my Doctors legitimately before matches. And I say, ‘Hey, what do you think about this?’ ‘Or what do you think about this?’ ‘Can I do this?’ Right? And, they’re very frank with me. As far as saying like, ‘No, you cannot do that’. ‘Yes we’re okay with this but only under certain circumstances.”

He added that he seeks consent from his doctor about the moves he executes and takes during his matches. He also admitted that the Tiger Driver was scary due to its significant injury potential. But Omega and Ospreay’s performance impressed Danielson.

All in all, the multi-time WWE Champion praised the duo for their stellar match. However, he also called the risk-to-reward ratio into question. Bryan Danielson is no stranger to being sidelined from debilitating injuries from wrestling.

A look at Bryan Danielson’s history of neck injuries

Bryan Danielson may be outmatched in terms of size but he triumphed against all odds and made a name for himself in the WWE. Formerly known as Daniel Bryan, the American Dragon won multiple Championships in the WWE. 

However, his body is still a road map of injuries. During his heyday, Daniel Bryan suffered a ‘stinger’ while wrestling a match against Randy Orton. Bryan lost feeling in his arms after suffering an injury that was tied to the neck and head area. Although the injury did not put Bryan on the shelf, it led to more severe problems going forward. 

At WrestleMania 30, during the peak of the Yes movement, Daniel Bryan realized his dream and beat Randy Orton and Batista to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. But celebrations came to a screeching halt as Bryan had to submit to a neck surgery that kept him out of commission for eight months. 

The complications in the neck caused Bryan to lose strength in his arms. Bryan’s atrophied arms from the mid-2010s show how grave his injury was.  Nevertheless, Daniel Bryan would then return after his recovery and win the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 31.
