John Cena Reveals His “Fish Tail and a Blonde Wig” Contribution to Barbie While Expressing His Gratitude

John Cena arguably had one of the biggest years of his movie career in 2023. The pro-wrestler-turned-actor had numerous releases throughout the year and managed to star in several hit films. One of his more commercially acclaimed projects this year was Barbie. Released in July 2023, the Greta Gerwig movie saw Cena play a version of Ken that was a little unconventional. Now, Cena has opened up about his feelings towards starring in the movie.

John Cena talks about the “hard work” for Barbie

Cena played Kenmaid, or Merman Ken, in the film. Unlike other versions of Ken, he didn’t have legs, but instead had a fishtail. Cena also wore a blonde wig to complete his unusual look.

Speaking to Extra TV, Cena shared that he was “really lucky” to get the part. “I’m very grateful for all the opportunities that come my way. But I was especially lucky for that. Didn’t have to do much. Just put on a fishtail and a blonde wig and let all the talented folks do the rest,” the 46-year-old said.

Cena, who was attending the premiere of the biographical sports drama ‘The Iron Claw’, also expressed his gratitude toward fans for making Barbie a success. As per reports, Barbie grossed $1.4 billion at the global box office.

John Cena volunteered for a role in Barbie

Back in May, Cena revealed how he ended up as a merman in Margot Robbie-starrer. Apart from playing the eponymous character in the film, Robbie was also one of the producers for the movie. Cena and the Australian actress are acquainted as they have starred together in Suicide Squad before.

Speaking to the Today show, the 16-time World Champion told the host that he asked his co-star and producer Robbie if he could play any character.

“In an accidental run-in with Margot Robbie, I said, ‘I will pretty much do whatever you guys need, ’cause I really enjoy the movie’,” he said on the show. Upon being asked whether he could play the role of a merman, Cena agreed and went on to portray Kenmaid.

Quite interestingly, Dua Lipa, who plays the mermaid in Barbie is also Cena’s co-star in their upcoming feature film Argylle. The spy thriller is set to release on February 2, 2024. Needless to say, Cena is having a busy time in Hollywood at the moment.
