AEW play-by-play commentator Jim Ross recently went on a hiatus after suffering a nasty black eye. Ross shared a picture of his swollen eye with the fans on Twitter, a couple of hours ahead of the debut of AEW Collision. June 17th also marked the return of CM Punk. Soon after JR tweeted about his eye, his fans wished him a speedy recovery.

Interestingly, the black eye did not keep Jim Ross from working, as the Oklahoma native showed up to work. Following the show, Jim Ross announced that he would be stepping away to heal up. But the fact that Jim Ross ignored his condition and carried in with his work is commendable. He recently provided his fans with an update on his eye injury.

Jim Ross is undeniably the voice of wrestling. For the longest time, JR was the voice of Monday Night Raw during his stint with the WWE. In addition, Ross wore many hats backstage, as he was also involved in scouting talent for WWE. Fans were worried after learning about Ross’ eye injury. In fact, the wound appeared to be so bad that it was painful to even see it. But thankfully, Jim Ross is healing up.

While speaking on an edition of Grillin’ JR, The WWE Hall of Famer revealed how severe his condition is. Ross has occasionally had black eyes in the past, but this was the worst case he had ever experienced.

He said, “I’ve had black eyes and football and horsing around and fighting and stuff as a kid, you know, getting a black eye as a kid was kind of a Badge of Courage. You know, so I’ve had plenty of black eyes. So I didn’t really think much about that, the only thing I did is it swole so quickly and so tightly that I couldn’t see out of it so therefore I couldn’t read.”

Nevertheless, by the looks of it, Jim Ross’ eye appears to have healed up partially. However, it is still enough to keep him from making his return anytime soon.

What caused Jim Ross’ horrific eye injury?

Wrestling is not an easy profession. Even when you’re not a wrestler, you are required to be on the road most days of the year. There is also no denying that it is a young man’s business. The 71-year-old, who is trying to defy his age, admitted that he has recently had a string of bad health luck while trying to keep up with the business.

Jim Ross stated that the night before Collision, he woke up in the middle of the night to answer a nature call. In doing so, he tripped over his CPAP cord and fell face-first.

What’s more horrific is that his eye hit the corner of his bed table. However, JR did not think much of it and went to sleep, only to wake up with a swollen eye and a bad headache.

Jim Ross further stated that Tony Khan doesn’t expect him to return until he has healed up quickly. We will have to wait and see when JR finally makes his return to AEW TV.
