It had nothing to do with piledrivers or body slams. It’s a battle that has haunted him for years, and it revolves around his beloved son, Reid Flair.

Reid Flair’s long and painful struggle with addiction is well-known among the wrestling community. It was a battle that ultimately claimed his life. As a father, Ric Flair did everything within his power to save his son from the clutches of this relentless foe. But in a candid interview on YouTube, Flair revealed the weight of the regret he carries on his shoulders.

In a recent conversation with Chris Van Vliet, the wrestling icon Ric Flair opened up about the immense personal regret he carries. It stems from the tragic loss of his son, Reid, to heroin addiction. Wrestling fans around the world are no strangers to this painful chapter in the Flair family’s history. Reid Flair’s battle with addiction was a long and heartbreaking journey, one that ultimately led to his untimely passing at just 25 years old in 2013.

Despite the fact that Ric Flair had nothing to do with his son’s descent into addiction, he candidly admitted, “I blame myself for my son.”

Flair’s own struggles with alcohol were witnessed by his children, including Reid, as they grew up. While this had nothing to do with Reid’s heroin addiction, Flair carries the weight of the regret that he might have done more to guide his son away from this path. 

Flair said he blamed himself not because he had anything to do with his son’s addiction but due to the fact he was under his watch. He also stated, “I’ll always look at that as being probably something I could have worked on more. I didn’t see that because I’ve seen guys do it all and then walk away from it right. But with him you find you… I found out that heroin is not an addiction. It’s a disease.” 

Reid’s recurring addiction struggles became a recurring nightmare for the wrestling legend. He described the torment of his son’s repeated disappearances every four months, the strain on his marriage, and his overwhelming sense of helplessness. Ric Flair’s interview reminds us that wrestling legends carry burdens beyond the ring.

Ric Flair’s bond with Hulk Hogan transcended the wrestling ring, as Hogan stepped in to provide essential financial support during a challenging time. In 2019, Flair revealed this heartwarming gesture on The Steve Austin Show. Facing a massive $500,000 debt due to his son Reid’s multiple rehab stints, Flair turned to Hogan for assistance. 

Hogan’s unwavering support solidified their friendship, and they’ve since become close friends who enjoy activities like friendly karaoke competitions at Hogan’s Hangout. Hogan stood by Flair’s side during his difficult times.
