Brock Lesnar needs no introduction to the average pro wrestling fan. ‘The Beast Incarnate’, who is celebrating his 46th birthday today, July 12, is a WWE icon, who showed a glimpse of his brilliance right from the start. In fact, Lesnar was one of those guys who created quite a buzz even before making his main roster debut.

You may ask, why so? The reason is pretty straightforward. In four years at college wrestling, Lesnar amassed a 106–5 record, becoming the NCAA Heavyweight Champion in 2000. One of the earliest people to reach out to the then-budding wrestler was Dave Meltzer. The prominent journalist caught up with the 24-year-old just days before WrestleMania 17 during his OVW days.

The said interview was conducted by Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez and aired on March 29, 2001. Lesnar was still a year away from making his main roster debut. At the time of the chat, he was honing his skills at Ohio Valley Wrestling.

During that time, Chyna had already captivated the WWE Universe. Billed as the ‘Ninth Wonder of the World’, the deceased legend was stepping in the ring with men and going toe-to-toe with them. This encouraged a young Lesnar to get a feel of jostling the WWE Hall of Famer.

After being asked who would he like to face in WWE, Lesnar said, “You know, it wouldn’t bother me. I would work with whoever. Chyna, I don’t care.” Unfortunately for him, the female wrestler had already exited WWE by the time Lesnar made his main roster debut.

But his journey wasn’t bad though. On the contrary, he received a mega push up front.

Lesnar defeated The Rock at SummerSlam to set a WWE record

While his desire to fight Chyna remained a distant dream, Lesnar was able to get into a feud with Dwayne The Rock Johnson, just months after his debut on March 18, 2022. The two took on each other at that year’s SummerSlam. The prize was the WWE Championship, which was held by The Great One.

After going back and forth in an exciting encounter, Lesnar won the match clean to become the youngest-ever WWE Champion, a record that stands today.

Later, he wrote in his autobiography that it was a careful plan by Vince McMahon to put him over. He also thanked Johnson for keeping his superstar ego in check and losing clean to a rookie. Soon after dropping his belt, Johnson moved base to Hollywood. It was also a reason for Vince McMahon to give the belt to Lesnar, as he displayed the markings of a champion even at such a young age.
