Edge has returned from suspected retirements twice now. Although his recent return was expected by many fans, the one he made in 2020 caught the wrestling industry off guard. For that, he wants to credit one WWE star for playing a big role in his in-ring return three years ago. In fact, Copeland couldn’t help but mention his Irish friend when he appeared in a podcast recently.
Speaking to Chris Jericho, on Talk is Jericho, the now-AEW talent revealed the role that Sheamus played behind his 2020 return to WWE. Although Edge still holds the credit for working on himself, according to him, his journey couldn’t have started without Sheamus.

During the podcast episode, the two wrestling industry stars were talking about Edge’s recovery phase after 2011. Since the WWE Hall of Famer had walked out of the promotion that year because of his neck injuries, nobody, including himself, thought that he would ever return. Much more than his fans, sitting at home and not wrestling was difficult for Edge, too. However, he recalled the time that he appeared in Sheamus’ Celtic Warrior Workouts.
During an episode of the Celtic Warrior Workouts, Copeland and Sheamus took off to enjoy some mountain biking. While on their trail, Edge bumped off a rock. Although he had already faced bumps in a ‘controlled’ environment before, facing one in such a raw circumstance really changed something inside Copeland. In the podcast episode, he recalled, “That was the first uncontrolled fall that I had taken and I started to kinda get the gears turning in that regard.”
This was when he started taking care of his body even more, using diet plans and his home gym. Then shedding light on when he decided that it was time to return, Edge said, “It wasn’t until that wipe out and really getting my fitness journey back on track. That is when I felt like that this thing might actually happen.”
Not only does Edge credit the 45-year-old for his comeback, but he also considers him a good friend. During WWE’s The Bump, the WWE legend didn’t shy away from revealing what his relationship with Sheamus is like.
Edge’s new best friend
Following his AEW debut, Edge quickly betrayed his former best friend. However, he found a new valuable friendship in his bond with Sheamus. Appearing on The Bump, Edge revealed, “That’s our relationship, we bust each other’s chops, but we also have each other’s backs.”

Some would be wondering about their final match if they were such good friends. However, the reason behind Edge’s last match against Sheamus was so that he could get a memorable goodbye. This was also because of the respect he has for his Irish friend since he helped him return to the ring again.
