WWE has made some headway in the Chinese Market after years of effort. The Asian country boasts an enormous market of potential fans who love all sports, especially combat sports. While Hollywood actors often speak a few dialogues in Mandarin when their script demands it, WWE chose to go with catchphrases.

The move was easier for wrestlers who perform live, compared to movies that take several cuts as in the case of John Cena. However, he fell in love with these catchphrases and chose to learn the entire language.

Mandarin is considered one of the most difficult languages. But this didn’t deter Cena, who went on and hired a tutor. The result handsomely paid off, as Cena won several Chinese fans over via his WeChat livestreams. In a 2017 interview with The Straits Times, John Cena said that he had been learning Mandarin for five years. Despite this, the star used to believe he spoke like a third grader.

He said, “I started wanting to learn Mandarin to get our global company to be a truly global company. [I’m] fascinated with the language and has become obsessed with trying to learn it.

Cena’s eternal dedication to Mandarin

John Cena is one of the most proactive WWE superstars. He frequently posts updates about WWE and his upcoming Hollywood projects. However, Cena doesn’t touch social media before polishing his Mandarin for at least 30 minutes. The people’s champ carries a ziplock bag with him that contains flashcards to keep his Mandarin skills at his fingertips.

John Cena in the same interview with Straits Times said, “So, on the days when I want to just cruise through Instagram, I have to tell myself that would be fun but do it after half an hour’s worth of cards. And I try to listen to podcasts and watch CCTV (China Central Television). I just try to immerse myself in the culture as much as I can.”
