Bill Goldberg has always been credited as a no-nonsense wrestler in every promotion he has worked in. His dominance in WCW, which was moved to the WWE, made him one of the most iconic wrestlers during the ’90s wrestling hype. With over two decades in the business and making a return in 2016, he’s seen the industry change.

After completing his final match in March of 2023, Goldberg retired for the last time. However, with his experience level, he is open to giving his opinion on the state of pro wrestling today.

When talking about icons of pro wrestling, Goldberg’s name cannot go unmentioned. The force of nature proved to be an instant success with his incredible feats of strength. Despite not being the best “wrestler”, fans loved him for the brutality he demonstrated in the ring. However, times have changed, and wrestling is not the same today.

During a recent interview with Chicago Sports Podcast, Goldberg was asked bout his opinion on the current state of storylines in pro wrestling. Prior to coming to the WWE, Goldberg was an icon of WCW from 1996 to 2001. During this time, he was built and sold as a monster in the ring without much depth or complexity.

But, as mentioned earlier, times have changed in pro wrestling, and today, storylines are more important. Goldberg got into this by saying, “The internal storylines I don’t think are better. The characters I surely know aren’t better.” This was in reference to the current storylines in pro wrestling and how they lack characters and depth.

He continued, “It’s tough to have the depth, and I think they’re lacking in that area.” Goldberg confessed that crafting stories for wrestlers is hard to accomplish. Only a handful of wrestlers got incredibly memorable storylines during their time. But Goldberg himself was written and sold as a wrecking monster and it worked to a great effect.

Bill Goldberg is one of the most iconic wrestlers with simple storylines

When it comes to pro wrestling, there are few who are as iconic as Goldberg. WCW caught lightning in a bottle with him. From a simple military-inspired theme song to a simple yet intimidating entrance. Everything about him was just simple, just eye-catching. His selling point was his in-ring feats of strength that blew the fans away.

Reminiscing about the past during an interview with Yahoo Sports, Goldberg said, “I remember when good versus evil was all that you needed.” This was during the time when storylines were simple and black and white. However, times have changed, and storylines are more complex, with multiple twists and turns. Among the top storylines in the WWE currently, The Bloodline stands out for how deeply it is crafted.
