“He Has No Respect for His Father”: Rey Mysterio Is Mentoring 28-Year-Old Mexican Sensation to Dethrone Son Dominik Mysterio as the NXT North American Champion

Rey Mysterio might have thrown a curveball at his son Dominik Mysterio. In an eventful episode of SmackDown Live, which featured the return of the Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns, it was Mysterio Sr. that produced the most significant talking point.

In exclusive digital footage from backstage, Rey Mysterio gave a fellow Mexican wrestler permission to capture the NXT North American title from Dominik.

What did Rey Mysterio say about Dominik Mysterio?

The father and son had a troubled relationship after Mysterio Jr. joined Judgement Day, and Rey Mysterio made things worse by fueling their hostility.

Rey talks to Dragon Lee from NXT in the exclusive footage shared by WWE. The former 3-time world champion praised Lee by mentioning: “You have big things ahead of you, you’re gonna become a big star here.”

Later, in a more serious tone addresses the lack of respect Dominik displays for his family. Rey quoted: “he has no respect for his father, mother, or his sister.”

However, things took an exciting turn when the NXT star asked Rey’s permission to face Dominik for his North American title at NXT. Rey not only obliged but told Lee that he was going to be present when the match happens, in the biggest shocker of the night.

Rey further said: “As a matter of fact, I want to be there when you fight against Dominik and take that North American title.“

It is astonishing to see Rey wanting to mentor Lee to dethrone his own son after he’s captured the new title on NXT, just days after celebrating his win. Hence, with such implications, it seems like the challenge is on, and if the match takes place, we will see Mysterio Sr. on NXT after years.

What else happened on SmackDown?

Rey additionally made an impact backstage and left a mark on the ring as well. He beat Cameron Grimes, LA Knight, and Sheamus in an excellent fatal-four-way match to advance in the US Championship Invitational.

Dominik Mysterio won again and kept his North American championship title. He defeated Butch with help from Rhea Ripley, the women’s champion.
