“He Feels This Way” – Dwayne Johnson Once Revealed if the Edginess and the Crazy Nature of the Attitude Era Bothered His ‘Old School’ Father

WWE has gone through multiple transitions as far as the type of content is concerned over the past four decades. There have been numerous eras captivating the fans like ‘The Golden Era’, ‘The New Generation Era’, ‘The Attitude Era, ‘The Ruthless Aggression Era’, and ‘The New Era’.

Each one of these eras had its own specialty and significance among the fans. But it is the Attitude Era wrestling fans still remember fondly to this very day because of the adult-rated content. It is the era that gave rise to superstars like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Kane, Mick Foley, and many more. And Dwayne Johnson once revealed what his father Rocky Johnson thought about the edginess of the era.

Rocky Johnson really liked the Attitude Era

Maybe it was the insane gimmicks or just that fans loved seeing Vince McMahon get beaten up in the ring by Steve Austin. But whatever the reason, fans of the Attitude Era will always cherish those years of TV-14-rated content. The Attitude Era would be incomplete without the wisecracks of The Rock which always had the fans rolling with laughter. And in one interview from 1999, Dwayne Johnson talked about his father’s love for the Attitude Era which his son was such an integral part of.

On the show called ‘Off the Record with Michael Landsberg’, Johnson also talked about how his father Rocky Johnson paved the way for the current crop of wrestlers. He said, “Well actually he feels pretty good about it, he feels pretty good about it because he feels this way it’s almost like he’s paved the road. He’s paved the road for myself and a lot of the athletes today in the WWF, so he has no problem with it, he has no problem with the attitude, he has no problem with the edginess or anything like that.”

Since Rocky Johnson came from a different era which was less edgy, many would have assumed his aversion to the Attitude Era’s product but that wasn’t the case.

And which father wouldn’t appreciate that era of wrestling their son so confidently dominated? But talking about the Attitude Era, there are certain events from that time period that left an indelible mark on the fans purely because of the raw content and over-the-top storylines.

How crazy was the Attitude Era?

Well, if you start talking about the Attitude Era, there are countless matches and gimmicks that if performed today would definitely get the WWE in trouble. The acts performed back then seemed acceptable but thinking about them 20 years later has definitely left some fans with doubts.

One such segment involved the leader of ‘Ministry of Darkness’ The Undertaker marrying Stephanie McMahon in the middle of the ring. Stephanie was tied to a cross-like symbol and Paul Bearer was the ‘Marriage Officiant’.

And just as ‘The Deadman’ was about to marry Stephanie, Steve Austin made a dashing appearance and played the knight in shining armor.

Other wild storylines include Austin attacking Vince McMahon in the hospital while he was dressed in medical attire. Also, Austin got into a full-on brawl with boxing legend Mike Tyson in the middle of the ring where both men had to be pulled apart by wrestling officials. Also finally who can forget the infamous ‘Hell In A Cell’ match that almost ended Mick Foley’s career?

To be honest, that match is the perfect epitome of how crazed out the ‘Attitude Era’ actually was.
