It is no doubt, John Cena was a huge part of WWE ratings for a longer period of time. Hence anything done with his status on the show may directly affect the channel in terms of ratings too. However,  McMahon decided still decided to prank USA Network as per Freddie Prinze Jr.

On his podcast, Wrestling with Freddie, the former WWE writer discussed the company’s deal with Endeavor. While talking about the same he recalled ‘Vinnie-Mac’ doing a prank with USA Network, by drafting Cena to SmackDown in 2011, only to send him back to RAW later that night.

Prinze said, “In fact when I worked there, Vince would mess with them on the draft. On the draft one year he drafted John Cena, which was the only ratings that Monday Night Raw would get, he drafted him to Friday Night SmackDown, and USA freaked out and started calling.”

He added, “This was in the script so we already knew. He drafted him back to Monday Night RAW as the final pick that night which is the stupidest thing.”

‘The Franchise Player’ was the face of RAW at that time. Fans filled the arena and switched on their televisions on Monday Nights to see ‘The Cenation Leader’. Cena was a major ratings puller during a difficult time for WWE and as such a move away from RAW which was telecasted by USA Network had them worried.

But the USA Network wasn’t the only ones panicking at the time. If you were a regular viewer of WWE in 2011, Cena moving to SmackDown was a big deal for the fans too. It put the WWE universe in a lot of thinking, but the former writer has his views on this prank.

After sharing this story about the 77-year-old pranking USA Network, Prinze Jr. quickly added his views on it. He was in the company at the time and claimed he didn’t like this from the former CEO of WWE.

The former WWE writer said, “It delegitimizes the entire draft process that they do every year. Like that could actually happen ‘No, we want him, no we want him,’ just every draft pick, and he did it just to screw with the people.”
