“I did it for The Rock”– this quote has become iconic over the years. Even though that storyline paused Rikishi’s momentum in WWE, it has since then become a memorable segment of WWE for the fans. Recently, Tommy Dreamer compared it to Jimmy Uso’s promo on SmackDown.

The ECW legend quickly claimed it did not satisfy him with the eight-time tag team champion’s reason to attack his brother. While talking on the Busted Open podcast Dreamer said Jimmy Uso’s reason didn’t make sense similar to his Hall of Fame father’s excuse in 2000.

The former two-time ECW Champion said, “The explanation to me wasn’t the best. You also think about when Rikishi turned on The Rock! That wasn’t the best explanation. And then Rikishi had his big run as babyface and then they try to turn him heel.”

He added, “Yes, he’s a Hall of Famer and Rikishi is one of my favorites of all time. Career-wise that could have been a turning point but it wasn’t, like why it didn’t make a lot of sense in a lot of people’s opinion. So they really have to think about it.”

It wasn’t just Dreamer, as many WWE fans also commented not being satisfied with Jimmy Uso explaining his actions. Many thought Jimmy did it for Roman Reigns, but in reality, he had another motive. Jimmy said he attacked Jey Uso because he didn’t want to lose his brother if he became ‘Tribal Chief’. However, there are several opinions, but Dreamer’s comparison to the Attitude Era segment of The Rock and Rikishi is a unique one.

What happened between The Rock and Rikishi in the year 2000?

Rikishi debuted in the year 1999 after an unsuccessful run in WWE, previously under other gimmicks. At the same time, The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin were at the top of the WWE card.

In November 1999, they put Austin out of TV to undergo neck surgery. For the same, WWE booked a segment of someone running over the ‘Texas Rattlesnake’. However, a year later on an episode of RAW in October 2000 Rikishi revealed he ran over Austin and he “did it for The Rock”. The reason  Rikishi gave was that he wanted to preserve The Brahma Bull’s WWE title reign at the time.
