As is the rule of nature, the new replaces the old. It has been that way for centuries. The movie business is no exception to this rule either. There have been legends who got replaced by newer stars as they went past their prime. Such has been the case with Dwayne Johnson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Sylvester Stallone. All three have earned their stripes with successful roles in acclaimed action movies. But there was a time when Johnson was still a rookie and the other two gentlemen were established stars.

When Johnson was asked if he would like to overtake them, he had an interesting answer. This interview took place on the British chat show ‘Richard & Judy’ on March 3, 2004.

During the time of the interview, Johnson had just started to make a name for himself in Hollywood. Given his expertise in the pro wrestling domain, it wasn’t hard for him to play the action hero straightaway. Be it in The Scorpion King, The Rundown, or his debut in the 2001 film The Mummy Returns.

The interview also came on the heels of Johnson’s success as a skilled bounty hunter in the 2003-released The Rundown. The film gained recognition internationally as Welcome to the Jungle. The interviewers said that there were talks about Johnson replacing Schwarzenegger and Stallone as the new face of the action genre. When they asked him the question, he appeared calm and respectful of his esteemed colleagues.

Stating his happiness, Johnson said, “By no means did I ever set out or have the intent to ever take over for those guys. I’m good friends with both those guys.” He also hailed both stars for making great films. Riding on the success of these movies, The Terminator star has a net worth of USD 450 million today. Stallone, who etched himself into the minds of millions with iconic roles such as Rocky Balboa and Rambo, has a net worth of $400 million currently.

Johnson said that if he could have half of the success of these two stars, he would consider himself to be successful. Today, Johnson draws one of the fattest checks in Hollywood. That is a sign of his success. Today, alongside his films, Johnson has made a name as a successful entrepreneur, taking his net worth to $800 million.

But do you know while Johnson himself didn’t want to overtake his seniors, The Rundown had a watershed moment that hinted at things to come?

Schwarzenegger’s probable baton passing moment in The Rundown

Johnson and Schwarzenegger have been good friends for a long time now. The seven-time Mr. Olympia had a cameo role in The Rundown. In a ‘blink and you miss moment’ the two actors also share screen space.

While passing him inside a club, Schwarzenegger utters “have fun”. While the line plays an integral part in the film, setting his character for what is to come, it also had a bigger impact.

Since then, many believe it was Schwarzenegger’s way of passing the baton to the next generation. Pretty cool, right? Johnson, however, hasn’t let his seniors down. While he also proved his acting chops by playing lighter roles, Johnson has never let go of his action-hero image.

A few weeks ago, he made a comeback as the iconic Luke Hobbs in Fast X, the 10th film of the Fast and Furious franchise. Johnson will be one of the main characters in the next installation of the $7 billion series.
