In less than a week, WWE will fly to Detroit for the biggest event of the summer, SummerSlam. It is also one of the marquee premium live events of the Stamford-based promotion. The company has big things planned as a very solid match card has shaped up for the show. That said, the high point of the show could be a return from none other than The Great One, Dwayne Johnson.

Grayson Waller’s continuous jabs at The Rock have fueled speculation about his return. However, rumors about his return have been persistent since last year. So will The Rock finally come back home?

Grayson Waller has made it his goal to insult The Rock every step of the way. At one point, the Australian wrestler successfully got a response from Hollywood’s megastar after making fun of the latter’s 1996 debut tribal outfit. The Rock, in response, called him an “Outback Jackoff”. But Waller’s obsession with The Rock did not end there, as he continued to throw barbs at him.

According to Wrestling Observer Radio, there is a slim chance that The Rock will return. When Dave Meltzer inquired about The Rock’s return, he was told, “Maybe.” Meltzer stated, “I mean, he could do it. I don’t know if Dwayne Johnson will come back, but if he’s going to do it for something, it’s gonna be for 50,000 fans in Detroit, which is this show.”

On the other hand, Ringside News reached out to a tenured employee from the creative team to ask about Dwayne Johnson’s potential return. According to their report, the employee relayed that even though the rumor is true, nobody in the writing staff is in the know. The report states,  “If it’s true, which I doubt, it has not been shared with the writing staff.”

It’s worth noting that The Rock’s return was heavily speculated ahead of WrestleMania 39. In fact, The Rock was rumored to return to the Royal Rumble and win the match to face Roman Reigns at the Grandest Stage. But it was later reported that the wrestling legend’s inability to be ring ready kept him from making his comeback.

At this point, we can’t entirely rule out Johnson’s return. Moreover, it will be interesting to finally see him on WWE TV after 4 years.

When was Dwayne Johnson’s last appearance on WWE TV?

With the ongoing Hollywood strike, it is possible for Dwayne Johnson to show up at SummerSlam. Considering the fact that his last WWE TV appearance was in 2019, Johnson could very well surprise his millions of fans.

The Rock was last seen on WWE TV on SmackDown’s 20th anniversary. The Brahma Bull made his presence felt, interrupting King Corbin. Furthermore, he worked in tandem with Becky Lynch and took out Baron Corbin.

If The Rock does come back to work an angle with Waller, it could be an impromptu match not longer than a few minutes. With SummerSlam right around the corner, a lot remains to be seen.
