Both wrestling heavyweights entered the match tied at 1-1 in their feud that has been going on since Backlash, when Rhodes busted Lesnar wide open. The match began and, as always, Lesnar had the upper hand as he hit Rhodes with multiple suplexes.
Despite all this punishment, Rhodes was not ready to give up and dragged himself up to continue his fight with Lesnar. But Lesnar saw red and F-5’ed Rhodes right through the announcers’ table. However, Rhodes would later gain some momentum. He even gave Lesnar a taste of his own medicine by getting him in a ‘Kimura lock’.
In the end, Rhodes pinned Lesnar to win the final battle of the feud. After the match, Lesnar did the unthinkable and raised Rhodes’s hand to the crowd, showing him respect for the courage he showed in the ring.
The move definitely touched Rhodes and in the SummerSlam press conference, he praised Lesnar for the incredible opportunity. He said, “I’m very grateful for what’s happened, I don’t wanna wrestle Brock Lesnar again. But I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do it, to compete at his level because I said this last night.”
He pointed out to the WWE Universe that they are lucky to have Brock Lesnar: “When he’s gone and I don’t know when that’s gonna be, who knows because he can go, when he’s gone I think the world will realize what we’ve got. It’s a freaking unicorn.”

And I thought, you know, maybe I’ve got my Harley Race. Just maybe because there is nobody tougher than Brock Lesnar”.

They mostly battled for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in the late 80s. Harley Race was a 7-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Rhodes defeated him twice to clinch the title. Their feud continued even into the 90s when both Race and Dusty Rhodes were part of WCW. On one notable occasion, Rhodes battled Race backstage while he was a manager for Big Van Vader.
In spite of the decades-long feud, Race had a lot of respect for Dusty Rhodes. In an interview, he praised Rhodes for having a big heart and doing great in the ring despite being a big guy. He commended him for his ability in the ring and his charisma, something that Cody Rhodes has definitely picked up from his legendary father.
