Cody Rhodes has had a complicated relationship with WWE. Everybody has witnessed him leave and return to WWE a number of times. There were different reasons for this act of his every time. However, when Rhodes returned to WrestleMania 38, he was planning on staying for long. There were speculations about who Seth Rollins might be wrestling in Mania 38. While some guessed it to be The American Nightmare, others couldn’t.

WWE Legends recently produced a new episode revolving around Rhodes’ father, Dusty Rhodes. Although fans watched the show for The American Dream, his younger son had an interesting opening scene. This specifically highlighted where Rhodes was before his blockbuster return to the promotion.

WWE’s smart move to keep Cody Rhodes concealed

The wrestler was long gone from WWE before his return in 2022. So, the company had planned to make the return a bit dramatic. The documentary opens up with fans outside the venue of WrestleMania 38, predicting who Rollins’ mystery opponent could be. After some fans predict it to be Cody Rhodes, the camera jumps to The American Nightmare.

The scene shows the wrestler receiving a call from his mother sitting right outside the rehearsal dinner venue. When she asks him where he is currently staying, Rhodes replies, “Right now we’re staying on the bus. I’m gonna stay here until they drag me out of it because I have been sequestered as a surprise for tomorrow.”

The uncertainty of the match could have been stressful for Rhodes. After all, the wrestler was returning home following a long break from WWE. However, after the match, Rhodes’ fans really believed that his father’s blessings were with him all along.

The American Nightmare’s 2022 return was sealed in victory

As soon as Cody Rhodes returned to his previous promotion, he was met with good luck. The writers knew the spark in the wrestler’s character and decided to go a certain way in WrestleMania. Despite Rhodes being nervous about the blockbuster match, everything went well. Rollins was defeated at WrestleMania 38 and the rivalry grew stronger.

The two went on to have a rematch at ‘Hell in a Cell’ 2022. Although Rhodes won the match again, he ‘embarrassed’ himself by tearing his pectoral muscles. The wrestler was able to pull through regardless of the injury. However, the situation worsened, causing him to take a break from the promotion yet again. The wrestler returned again in 2023 and hasn’t looked back since.
