Grayson Waller recently made waves during an appearance on an Australian talk show alongside LA Knight to promote WWE’s upcoming Elimination Chamber in Perth, Australia. This marks WWE’s first PLE event since 2019, and both stars were sent to boost the promotion.

During an interview on the Sunrise news show, things took an unexpected turn when the hosts asked Knight to perform his signature move on a departing colleague. When Knight declined, Waller stepped in playfully, only to be interrupted by John Cena‘s music.

He said, “I don’t think you understand, because if I go over there we’re gonna have the police here because I’m not gonna give you some fake punch. I’m gonna punch you straight in the jaw. The disrespect that you give me when you act like this isn’t real. Don’t act tough. You guys disrespect us, are you kidding me?” Waller, not amused, jokingly threatened legal action, insisting he wouldn’t deliver a fake punch and suggesting the police be involved.

Despite expressing displeasure with one of the hosts, Waller maintained respect for Natalie Barr, highlighting that she had not disrespected them during the interview. Grayson Waller expressed some frustration but maintained professionalism, emphasizing the importance of kayfabe. After a brief tense moment, he clarified that his feelings weren’t directed at the hosts. Throughout the incident, LA Knight observed with amusement.

The episode made for a memorable promotion of the Elimination Chamber in the Australian market.

The rich tradition of upholding kayfabe in professional wrestling

Instances of wrestlers safeguarding kayfabe have a long history, as illustrated by John Stossel‘s encounter nearly four decades ago. In December 1984, during an interview with David Schultz, also known as “Dr. D,” Stossel questioned the authenticity of professional wrestling, prompting Schultz to slap him twice, causing pain and hearing loss.

The incident, captured on tape and later broadcast on “20/20,” resulted in legal action. Stossel filed a lawsuit against Schultz and WWF, leading to a $425,000 settlement.

A similar situation unfolded in 1997 during a memorable appearance by Vader and The Undertaker in Kuwait. The Deadman stayed in character despite unexpected turns in the interview. Fortunately, Grayson Waller managed to navigate his situation without legal repercussions, but the potential for escalation, akin to Schultz’s level, loomed.
