Did CM Punk Get Approval for a Vince McMahon’s Reference on Raw? Here’s Everything You Need to Know About the Backstage Reaction to the Controversial Segment

CM Punk recently elevated a hit show for the March 25th episode of Monday Night Raw. ‘The Best in The World’ couldn’t do much because of his injury, but he sure had a lot to say. While it was a fun night with some good banter between him, Seth Rollins, and Drew McIntyre, he also drew some negative attention.

During the promo, CM Punk gave a not-so-subtle reference to Vince McMahon. Drew McIntyre was boasting about being ‘The Chosen One’ and Punk dared him to name the man who gave him the label. But did the Straight Edge wrestler invoke this reference by himself or was this permitted by the creative team of WWE?

Did CM Punk go too far to hype his home crowd?

The March 25th show of Raw was held in Chicago, the home turf of CM Punk. He eagerly performed, and the crowd eagerly anticipated his appearance. Punk had the ball in his court almost the entire time and got the better of both Rollins and McIntyre. But this did come at a price. CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, and Seth Rollins are some of the most talented pro wrestlers in the WWE locker room right now. They did receive a direction for the segment from Adam Pearce. Given their skill and experience, they had the freedom to choose their own words.  This resulted in CM Punk making a Vince McMahon reference, and also cursing on the show. He said, “Tell everyone who chose you, say his name if you have the b**ls.”

Fightful Select reported in the past that many promos seemed non-scripted but actually went through the approval process.

Drew McIntyre even asked Punk to hold his horses without drawing attention and told him, “PG, brother.”

This was not anticipated by the WWE production team. Especially after a memo was sent to the entire locker room to address concerns about swearing arose with some of The Rock’s recent promos.

So far, none of the three superstars have received any sort of notice or complaints about anything. Thus, CM Punk didn’t receive any form of approval from the creative team or Triple H to make a Vince McMahon reference. But it may not have been in the best taste for the backstage team as well. In fact, the former AEW star could potentially be under more scrutiny for his upcoming commentary stint.

WWE to potentially censor Punk at WrestleMania XL

The WWE Universe was very excited to see CM Punk on the 40th anniversary of WrestleMania. Unfortunately, however, the WWE Superstar has been ruled out for some time due to an injury that occurred at the Royal Rumble. Despite this, the Chicago fans went home with great news. It was when they found out that Punk would join the commentators for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match.

However, WWE may not give CM Punk a free pass like they did in the latest episode of Raw. He could potentially be given some boundaries and a limit will be exercised on his degree of improvisation.
