In May 2016, Cody Rhodes shared on his Twitter that he asked WWE to release him from the company. He stated the reason was that he was unhappy with the ‘Stardust’ gimmick he was playing during the time and his overall booking. WWE and Rhodes went their separate ways for a few years until he came back to WWE last year.

That being said, even though ‘The American Nightmare’ cut ties with WWE during that period, the Stanford-based promotion still gave him a chance to honor his late father’s memory.

While speaking during The American Dream: To Be The Man, Rhodes opened up about WWE being kind to him even after he was no longer a part of the company. He mentioned that after he ventured on a separate path, WWE still took his feelings into consideration.

He admitted he feared they might not let him continue to write a book about his father’s legacy after leaving the sports entertainment giant. It was very important for him to do that so he can honor his late father’s memory. Fortunately, WWE let him write the book on The American Dream. Since Dusty Rhodes name and likeliness has been associated with WWE for a long time, any projects outside of it will require permission from WWE and as such Rhodes was grateful to the company to allow him to honor his father’s legacy by writing a book.

He said, “It is very was very important to me. They granted me the right to write his book before I left. But it was important. I knew it was one of the big risks I was taking with leaving as well. They may take the book away from me. [But] They did not.”

During the interview, Rhodes also mentioned that he only wanted himself to write about his father’s legacy. As he and his father were pretty close, he thinks that he was the right person to bring out the words in the book to life.

He added, “I didn’t want anyone else to write it. Dusty was my best friend. We were very close. Everybody knows that and I am trying to kind of do justice to his legacy.” At last, he didn’t forget to mention what WWE and Triple H have done for his late father.

He said, from immortalizing The American Dream with a statue, like many other legends in the company, to starting an annual tag team tournament in his name, WWE has rolled out a h*ll of a series of things” for Dusty Rhodes.
