CM Punk is currently an enormous asset to Tony Khan’s promotion. Prior to his AEW alliance, the Second City Saint had a noteworthy run in WWE with a number of accolades to his name. According to Paul Heyman, he was close to recording another historic feat for himself if WWE didn’t dismiss his chance during WrestleMania 29.

The Undertaker’s phenomenal WrestleMania streak will go down as one of the most remarkable runs in pro wrestling history. While Brock Lesnar proved to be the man to put an end to his impressive run of 21 wins at WrestleMania 30, it could have happened a year earlier at the hands of CM Punk.

CM Punk showed immense potential during his WWE tenure. Be it a six-time World Champion, or a two-time Money In The Bank winner, there were a lot of honorary prefixes you can add before his name. Fans widely cherish his infamous Pipe bomb promo that helped him rejuvenate the spark after undergoing some temporary stagnation.

However, despite attaining such heights as an in-ring performer, WWE snubbed him when it came to defeating The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 back in 2013. After almost a decade, Heyman discussed the reason behind Punk not being Vince’s choice to end The Deadman’s historical streak.

During his latest appearance in ‘Tetragrammaton’ with Rick Rubin, the special counsel of Roman Reigns noted, ”If there’s a guy that could be anointed as a top-tier star. If there’s someone that could become equal to Cena at this point in time… a clear 1 to 1A, that if we give Punk this victory, we’ve established someone for the next 20 years as a star.’ And I thought the case could be made for them.

Heyman continued, “CM Punk was ready to beat the Undertaker. in Vince’s mind and a lot of other people’s minds and most likely intake was mine. Phil Brooks was not going to get that victory. CM punk? Yes. Phil Brooks’s, no. That was their decision ”

Despite failing to earn the trust of WWE heavyweights in his initial days, the question that pops in again and again was, will Punk consider a last run with WWE?

After a lot of speculation regarding Punk’s return to AEW, finally, the star appears to be next in line for a dream match at AEW Forbidden Door. He will possibly square off against NPJW veteran KENTA for his match.

But when it comes to a potential WWE return, his recent Raw backstage appearance amid AEW suspension ignited hope among fans of a sensational return. However, the spark of hope soon faded out after it has been revealed that his brief appearance in the rival promotion was just him visiting some of his friends.

There is no word on when his ongoing contract is going to end with AEW, either.
