Dwayne Johnson is known for displaying complete honesty and enthusiasm whenever he announces a new project he’ll be working on. The Hollywood megastar carried the same charm and vibe when he announced the live-action remake of Disney’s celebrated movie, Moana. However, while The Rock was looking at this movie as a homecoming, the woman who voiced the animated character wasn’t exactly on the same page as him.

Auli’i Cravalho, the actress behind the titular role of Moana has revealed that she will not be playing the character in the live-action adaptation. Fans were desperate to know the reason behind the decision. The actress recently revealed why she chose to bow out. In fact, she also revealed why she doesn’t carry a shred of regret regarding her choice.

Why doesn’t Auli’i Cravalho want to act beside Dwayne Johnson?

Auli’i Cravalho recently appeared for an exclusive interview with TheWrap. The Hollywood actress had publicly announced that she had opted out of the live-action a long while ago. Unveiling her reasons, Cravalho said that her exit intends to make room for more women from her homeland to get the prestigious role.

According to Cravalho, “It feels really important to me to pass the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, and I say that with my whole chest.” This showcases that while the voice behind Moana thinks about her people as much as the movie’s character.

She further added, “I have been invited, and I exist in these beautiful AAPI spaces, Asian American Pacific Islander and I am one of the few Pacific Islanders. And I’ll say it again, I am one of the few Pacific Islanders.” The co-voice actor of Dwayne Johnson stressed that it is very important that the story of her people gets told.

In fact, she said that it is highly important in order to give Pacific Islanders the true representation they deserve.

So, is Auli’i Cravalho completely out of the picture?

Auli’i Cravalho said that her people, most particularly the ones from her homeland of Hawaii, don’t get represented accurately. To make sure this doesn’t happen, she said that it is important for more Pacific Island natives to get the same platform she has. 

Cravalho will not be playing Moana’s part. But, she loves the movie as much as Dwayne Johnson and would still be a part of it. Auli’i Cravalho noted that she will be one of the executive producers of the Disney film. Cravalho also said that she wants the representation of the Pacific Islanders to increase in other roles. For example, roles like writing and direction as well.
